COVID Considerations for the Start of School

August 22, 2021

Good Afternoon,

As we look forward to the beginning of this 2021-22 school year, we would like to again reinforce the importance of obtaining vaccines and wearing masks. Please find attached to this email the recently updated quarantine protocols from the Ohio Department of Health. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health has also endorsed these and we will follow them in our district.

First, please obtain a vaccination for your child if he or she is 12 years old or older. Vaccination status is a very important variable in determining quarantine status. Vaccinated students exposed to a COVID case do not need to quarantine unless they experience symptoms

Second, we are still not mandating masks, but you will notice that unvaccinated students who are exposed to a positive case in a classroom setting do not have to quarantine if they were wearing a mask at the point of exposure. However, if the contact was not wearing a mask, they must quarantine following the attached guidelines. Clearly, keeping students in school is important for all of us. Consistent wearing of masks will help us to function as closely to normal as possible during this current COVID surge.

In summary, unvaccinated students exposed to a positive contact in a classroom setting:

  • Masked = no quarantine
  • Not masked = quarantine

We continue to update our "COVID Dashboard" on our website so that you can have up-to-date statistics about the number of cases we are experiencing in our schools.

We trust that families will consider all variables and make the best possible decisions for their child(ren). Our collective approach to health and safety will largely shape the school year that we will enjoy or endure.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
