Ridge-Brook Celebrates Reading with a Read-A-Thon this Spring

Ridge-Brook Read-A-Thon

Ridge-Brook Elementary School has been celebrating their love of reading with a read-a-thon!

Started on March 22, 2021 and going strong for three weeks, students asked family and friends to sponsor them as they read. Students could read anything that interests them.

“It’s a way for us to promote reading and show the importance of reading, so whenever there is a chance for us to do that, we want to do it,” shared Steve Perry, principal at Ridge-Brook. “It’s also a way for us to generate some funds for our school.”

The idea is for students to work with their sponsors to negotiate a donation based on the number of books or number of pages they read. It is totally up to the student and sponsor. For example, a family member could sponsor a student for $10 if they read 100 pages or maybe even $5 for every book they read.

This is the first year the school has held a read-a-thon and it has been a great fundraising success. In fact, in just four days, students raised $2,329.95.

“We are always looking for ways to raise money for student activities, have assemblies and do things for our kids,” Perry explained. “We decided to do a read-a-thon because it’s a safe way to fundraise during the pandemic. Ultimately, we want students to read and have fun reading.”

Perry also reached out to local community and state leaders to promote reading by recording themselves reading a book out loud to students on video.

Parma Schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Smialek, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown and his wife Connie, Parma Mayor Timothy DeGeeter, Ohio House of Representative Jeff Crossman, and police officers and highway patrol troopers are just a few of the people who participated.

“I wanted to get people who were successful in their field to talk about the importance of reading and why students should read,” he explained. “And, at the same time, share one of their favorite books with us.”
