Now that's sweet! Greenbriar donates to soldiers with Operation Gratitude

Donations gathered for Operation Gratitude November 25, 2019

Greenbriar Middle School students generously donated their candy from Halloween to troops overseas through Operation Gratitude.

“Operation Gratitude is an organization that sends over 300,000 individually addressed care packages to soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen deployed overseas,” described Brian Majkrzak, a math teacher at Greenbriar Middle School. “Each package contains snacks, hygiene products, entertainment and handmade items, as well as personal letters of support. Thanks to the Halloween candy give-back, a handful of candy is placed in every Care Package they send.”

Impressively, over 375 pounds of candy was collected and donated by students this year.

Majkrzak said the school has been participating in this program on and off for the past eight years now.

“We think it is a good way to help teach our students the importance of giving back and making a difference for others that are sacrificing for all of us,” he expressed. “We are all very proud of them.”

The school held a contest where the homeroom that collected the most candy would receive a reward. They also reached out to community members and even surrounding communities to donate to the cause.

Once collected, the school packaged their donations, weighed it and dropped it off to a local drop off point in the area. It is then sent to Operation Gratitude and included in the care packages.

“In this case, it’s not just the idea of giving back, but an idea of gratitude for the job others do for us,” Majkrzak shared. “With opportunities like this, it just lends itself to students and everyone in our community to show some compassion and thanks to others.”

Operation Gratitude was started in 2003 and since then, the organization has sent more than 2.4 million care packages to the troops.

Way to go Greenbriar!
