Kindergarten Registration set for March 6 & 7 at Parma Branch Library
February 11, 2019
Starting children off in Kindergarten for many families can be a stressful time. To help make a positive first step, the Parma City School District holds the annual Kindergarten Registration event each spring.
This year, Kindergarten Registration will be held on March 6 and 7 at the Cuyahoga County Public Library Parma Branch, 6996 Powers Boulevard in Parma. The event will run from 7:30 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm on both days.
Kindergarten Registration is a convenient, fun way for students and families to get registered for next school year while learning more about school and the community.
“We make it as festive as possible, we want it to be a good experience,” Pam Edmonds, Student Services Director for the PCSD, explained. “When they arrive, there are different t-shirts and giveaways. There are a lot of different, fun activities. The library does a really nice activity and book giveaway. It’s just to start their educational career on a positive note.”
To be eligible for Kindergarten, a child must be five years of age by September 30, 2019. A family can choose to wait until a child turns six before enrolling the child in Kindergarten.
At Kindergarten Registration, nurses with the Parma City School District provide a vision and hearing screening, eliminating the need to pull them out of classes in the fall. In addition, school and community organizations and resources are all conveniently located in one place, including various PCSD departments, the Parma Area Family Collaborative, Parma Council of PTAs, Girls Scouts and Boys Scouts.
“(PCSD) Nutrition Services will practice with kids walking down a lunch line,” Edmonds expressed. “They will get a snack and carry a little tray down the line...We reach out to different organizations that are youth oriented and people ask to join us.”
Besides the fair-like atmosphere, Kindergarten Registration is an easy and quick way to register your child for school. However, parents must provide essential documents to complete the process. Some of these documents include the parent’s photo identification, the child’s birth certificate and immunization records, confirmation of residency and, in the case of parental divorce, court orders awarding legal custody.
For a full list of items needed is available on the website at www.parmacityschools.org/studentservices.
Parents wanting to find out more information about the STEM program can learn more about the lottery process at Kindergarten Registration.
Families are also invited to the STEM Family Open House at Pleasant Valley Elementary School on March 4 to learn more abut the program. For more information about STEM Education and the registration process, please visit https://www.parmacityschools.org/Page/8156.
In the end, the PCSD Kindergarten Registration event is the place to go for incoming Kindergarten students and families. The PCSD highly encourages parents to register their student at this event, avoiding long lines for registration before school begins.
“In the fall, they would need to call and make an appointment and need to come to Central Office,” Edmonds added. “At least at Kindergarten Registration they are going to come to a fun function which is like a fair.”
