Career Tech Open Houses bring information to PCSD students and families in grades 5-11
November 5, 2018
The Parma City School District has a variety of educational options that prepare students for college or a career.
To help students and their families better understand the wide array of programs and classes offered through the Career and Technical Education Department (CTE), the Parma Schools is hosting three Open House events in November at each high school.
The Open Houses are open to all students and their parents and guardians in grades 5-11 in the PCSD.
Career and Technical Open House nights start at 5:30 pm, with information and presentations for students in grades 5-9.
“It’s a great way to expose our younger students and their families to the offerings of our Career and Technical Education programs at all three buildings,” Kristen Plageman, Career and Technical Education Director said. “They can start to begin the thought process on what’s available, do their planning, and maybe helps them to pick out their elective courses.”
For example, middle school students who may wish to enroll in programs like networking could enroll in computer and technology semester courses to prepare.
“If they want to go into Culinary, maybe take some of our food courses and our Family and Consumer Sciences courses,” Plageman added. “It’s early preparation and great transition planning for our students.”
For students and families in grades 10 and 11, the Career Tech Open House begins at 6:45 PM in the auditorium. After a brief, 30 minute opening presentation, students will be invited to visit one to two classrooms to learn more from the individual teachers.
“It’s a teacher presentation on the college credits offered, the certifications, the curriculum and the workforce development,” Plageman explained. “And if parents have more individual questions after, they can contact me or the individual teacher. Either one.”
For Plageman, even parents who have visited a CTE Open House before will benefit from new information.
“We’re always evolving,” Plageman explained. “We’re always adding on more college credits. We’re always looking at certifications, to make sure that we are up-to-date. Things are changing yearly.”
Grade 10 and 11 students who are interested in applying for one and two year Career Tech pathway programs need to submit an application by December 21.
“There will be applications available the night of the Open Houses, plus all building’s Student Services has them,” Plageman said. “The applications are due back to their home school’s Student Services office by December 21.”
Students will be notified regarding placements starting in January, through their counselors.
