Three PCSD schools earn recognition for PBIS programs

Three more schools in the Parma City School District have been recognized by the State of Ohio for their outstanding Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports programs.

 

Normandy High School, Hillside Middle School and John Muir Elementary School earned Bronze Recognitions from the Ohio PBIS Network and the Ohio Department of Education for their Tier I PBIS programs.

 

Tier I PBIS supports are school-wide programs that create a positive school environment with clear expectations for behaviors in the classroom and throughout the school.

 

These schools join Parma Senior High School, Bronze Recognition, and Thoreau Park Elementary School, Silver Recognition, as award recipients in 2019.

 

“Normandy High School is very proud of this PBIS Bronze Recognition accomplishment for our first full year of PBIS implementation during the 2018-2019 school year,” expressed Michelle Kensinger-Smart, assistant principal at Normandy High School. “We consider this a team effort, as we believe each and every staff member in our school building has the potential to positively impact student lives, either academically, behaviorally, and/or socially. Our staff has embraced the tenets of PBIS Tier 1, including communicating common expectations throughout our building and incorporating strategies to support a healthy school climate.”

 

This school year, Normandy is working on Tier II programming for students who may need more individualized interventions and supports.

 

“We have also opened our ‘Invader Store’ where students who have earned ‘Invader Bucks’ from our staff members have the opportunity to purchase rewards in exchange for positive behavior,” Kensinger-Smart added. “Our ‘Invader Snack Shack’ is open after school as a daily fundraising opportunity this year, which supports our PBIS Student of the Month luncheons. We are also working to grow our student PBIS team and look forward to hearing the wonderful ideas our students have to continue to build a strong school and keep Normandy an excellent place to learn and grow.”

 

Hillside Middle School is honored to receive formal recognition from the state and appreciates the hard work of all staff and PTA members who support students every day.

 

“Our staff goes above and beyond to plan for, teach and model our behavioral expectations daily,” Hillside Principal Michelle Cook shared. “We also work in collaboration with our PTA which staff our Tiger Way Reward Store, as well as assists with a large portion of the funds for the store.”

 

“It is important to have a strong PBIS program because we want to always encourage our students to make positive choices and recognize them for when they do,” Kimberly Kohut, assistant principal at Hillside, added. “It is also important for the PBIS program to help guide us on how to respond when a child does not make a positive choice. Using a school-wide common language and having behavior expectations explicitly modeled and taught helps redirect students who may be struggling with their behavior.”

 

For the future, Hillside is working to develop more initiatives for students as well as formalizing Tier II supports and intervention. The goal is to apply for Silver Recognition by Spring 2021.

 

John Muir Elementary School is also working to improve its Tier II programming for students and would like to continue to grow its PBIS program for the future.

 

“Our district framework presents a focus on the Essential Elements of Instruction and Building Resilient Learners,” explained Dr. Karl Schneider, principal at John Muir. “Building a strong PBIS program is tied to building resilient learners and is a critically important part of our work. So, we prioritized our efforts to improve the culture of our building and clearly teach and reinforce our behavioral expectations through a strong PBIS program.”

 

He added the school, like others, gathered data, reflected on best practices and highlighted opportunities for growth. The PBIS team then created a plan for improvement and implemented that plan with commitment from staff and students.

 

“We are proud of the work our staff and students have invested in PBIS and building resilient learners,” Schneider shared. “For us to be recognized with the Bronze Award is an acknowledgment of those efforts and our commitment to creating a safe and healthy school environment.”
