Normandy High School Business Students Take Home First Place in Competition

On October 5, 6 and 8, Normandy High School Business Education students Corey Calta, Ben David and Lucas Sochacki competed in a business plan competition against students from schools across the nation. Students were tasked with creating an innovative product under the Nike brand. They worked for two days online with business mentors Casey Null, Emily Knapp and Nicole Zaino and created an idea for a Nike meal subscription service for aspiring athletes called “Feast Like a Beast”. The team of Calta, David and Sochacki finished in first place in the competition and earned a cash prize and Doordash gift card.
Normandy student Jesus Leon also competed in the competition and was placed with students from another school. According to Sara Hill, coordinator of the SuitUp competition, “Jesus did a fantastic job and carried his team’s presentation.”
“I enjoyed the work we did and we had great mentors,” said Corey Calta.
Ben David stated, “I learned to not take any idea off the table, because our first idea was Nike cookware, and we built off that idea to come up with the meal plan concept."
Paula Murray, Normandy High School Business and Marketing Education Teacher, expressed admiration for her students who went above and beyond the requirements of the class to take part in this experience.
“Students often say that the things we do in class do not feel 'real world' and this event certainly allowed them that authentic experience that is often lacking in the classroom," she shared. "These students gave up their free time and after-school activities for two days to participate. I am impressed and very proud of their efforts."
SuitUp is a 501(c)3 organization with a mission to increase career readiness for all students through innovative business plan competitions. Through SuitUp, students experience solving a realistic corporate challenge, such as designing a new product for Nike. They interact with corporate volunteers who coach them on marketing, design, financing, and strategy as well as professional “soft skills”, before helping them pitch virtually to judges for a cash prize. By the end of the experience, students can see the corporate world as part of “their world” and know that job titles, such as CEO, CFO, VP of Marketing, etc. are now in their grasp.
