A message from Superintendent Charles Smialek, Ph.D.
October 28, 2019
We continue to progress through our Strategic Consolidation process. The Superintendent’s page on our website contains both the schedule of remaining meetings and an online survey that we invite you to complete.
Your input is an extremely important component to building a plan that can gain consensus support throughout the community.
In our continuing effort to be transparent, it is important to inform you of several recent developments.
First, we have hired Cresco Real Estate (crescorealestate.com) to provide a “Broker’s Opinion of Value”, or BOV, for all of our properties. Similar to appraisals, the BOVs will provide to us an assessment of the worth of the many parcels we own across our three communities.
These will become one factor in helping us to decide what properties we should use for our new schools and which we should eventually look to sell. Though new construction is obviously dependent upon passage of a bond issue and, even at that point several years from actually taking hold, we want our plans to be as well-informed as possible. Cresco’s expertise will help us to achieve that goal.
Second, we have secured bids for the demolition of the former Hanna school on Snow Road. We originally planned to have completed this project by this point in the year. However, we first learned of drainage concerns that the city of Parma requested we address. This prompted an addition to the scope of work that we plan to complete, thus delaying our timeline for initiation of the project.
Then, representatives from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) explained that we could potentially secure 31% (the state’s share of the cost of new construction) of the price of demolition if we include this as part of our Master Plan.
Our Board will vote on the adoption of the Master Plan in December, so we have decided to delay the Hanna project again to maximize the opportunity to share the cost with the OFCC. We believe this delay is the most fiscally responsible course of action.
We look forward to continuing to provide updates as we enter an extremely exciting period for our district!
