Two PCSD schools recognized for positive impacts with PBIS programs

Over the summer, Thoreau Park Elementary School and Parma Senior High School received positive news.
Their PBIS programs (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) received state recognition from the Ohio PBIS Network and the Ohio Department of Education.
Thoreau Park earned the PBIS Silver Recognition Award for best practices in Tier I and Tier II PBIS programs and Parma Senior High received the PBIS Bronze Recognition Award for their Tier I program.
Tier I PBIS supports are school-wide programs that create a positive school environment with clear expectations for behaviors in the classroom and throughout the school. Tier II are additional and individualized supports and interventions for students.
According to the Ohio PBIS Network: “These districts do a superior job of enhancing their school climates and cultures in support of their schools, students, and academic achievement. These districts recognize that improvement in student behavior and achievement within their schools requires changes in adult behavior and in district and school systems.”
“Thoreau Park receiving the State of Ohio PBIS Silver recognition is a great achievement and honor for our school community,” expressed Ted Bickley, Principal at Thoreau Park Elementary. “It shows a dedication to providing individual students with the supports they need to be successful in school.”
He added the school’s goal was not to receive silver recognition, but rather make sure every student in the building is having a positive experience.
“To facilitate this, we implemented some programming and protocols that allow grade levels and support staff to analyze student data, along with teacher/staff narratives, to determine which students might need that additional support and create Student Success Plans,” Bickley explained. “Once implemented, these plans are monitored, adjusted, and closed as students show consistent success. The Student Success Plans can include things like adult mentors, small focus groups, and alternative recess, to name a few.”
Stephanie Nicola, Assistant Principal at Parma Senior High, said the school has worked very hard to create a PBIS program that makes an impact for high school students and staff. While it has been a challenge, the PBIS team has seen results.
“Parma Senior High uses positive initiatives to create an atmosphere that is disciplined and promotes student efficacy,” she shared. “The focus is to promote respect, responsibility, and readiness to learn across all settings. The PBIS team at PSH works diligently to create a home away from home for staff and students.”
Over the past five years, the school’s PBIS team at the school has worked to educate staff and students about benefits of having clear expectations and positive recognition.
This year, the goal is to include Tier II initiatives and work toward Silver status.
“We will achieve this goal by focusing on the 15 percent of students that need extra behavioral support in the areas of attendance to school and decreasing suspension rates,” Nicola explained. “Furthermore, the PBIS team will continue to make informed decisions through data analysis and increase our communication with stakeholders such as staff, students, families, and community members.”
“I am thankful to work with such a dedicated group of staff and students that have made the PBIS Bronze Certification possible,” she added. “It is exciting to have reached that goal and to continue to promote a positive environment that serves the needs of all students!”
