Culinary Arts Program presents Mangia Madness!

Because of high order volume and outpouring of support, the cut-off to order from this sale has been moved to 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 17 to ensure all orders are of the highest quality. Thank you!

The PCSD Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts Program is serving up delicious dishes for the community to order and enjoy the rest of this school year!  

Usually, the culinary program is in full swing with the student-run Sword and Shield Restaurant at Normandy High School and catering orders being filled regularly. 

However, with the coronavirus pandemic, there have not been many opportunities for students to share their talents. That’s when the program decided to offer curbside to-go options. 

This January, Culinary Arts presents Mangia Madness! 

“We thought opening the sale to the community would help promote the great work our students do and also provide them opportunities that they are missing out on due to the current Covid-19 restrictions,” explained Iann Johnson, Chef Instructor for the Culinary Arts program at Parma City Schools. “Over the next week, our students are going to be working on research and development of the recipes for the sale. They will be developing and scaling the recipes, so they can produce the volume needed for the upcoming sale. The week of the sale they will use the recipes and resources that they developed to produce all of the orders.”

The mouth-watering menu will feature family-style servings (4 – 6 people) of pastas, salads and desserts including Chicken Bacon Mac and Cheese, Broccoli Alfredo, Caesar Salad with Rosemary Focaccia Croutons and House-Made Creamy Caesar Dressing, Loaf of Garlic Bread, and fresh-baked brownies. 

“Students don’t have many of the large-scale food production and customer service opportunities that they usually do. We hope these events allow them to see and experience that side of the industry," Johnson shared. "This past year has also been very difficult on the hospitality industry across the nation, so we are using this experience to show students that even though this is not how we typically operate as a program, we are looking for ways to adapt and change to remain successful.”

All items will be available for pick up Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 3 to 6 p.m. Due to the current social distancing requirements, the program will have drive-up services during pick-up times. Orders can be picked up by the pool doors in front of Normandy High School.

The program hopes to continue with these staff and community to-go orders once a month. Johnson said there are plans for a modified yearly pierogi dinner and fish fry, St. Patrick's Day Reuben sale and Cinco De Mayo fiesta. More information will be available soon!

Culinary Arts is a two-year program offered to juniors and seniors that teaches a variety of hands-on skills as well as industry certifications and college credit. Students are prepared for a successful career in the hospitality industry right after graduation or can continue their studies at the college level.
