Welcome to the Department of Safety and Security

The Parma City School District is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We believe that students learn best when they can attend classes in a secure and welcoming environment.

Our Safety and Security staff are at work 24 hours a day protecting our school buildings, central office, and Byers Field. The District presently has surveillance cameras in operation to support its security efforts. In addition, the Safety and Security Supervisor works closely with the Police and Fire Departments in the cities of Parma, Parma Heights, and Seven Hills.

The FBI estimates there is a sex offender living within every square mile of the United States. The crimes committed by this group include, but are not limited to, child molestation and pedophilic acts.

We all want our children to live in a world of trust and love, but we must also protect our children from those who would do them harm. Ultimately, only you can determine the amount of protection your child needs. Although there are many agencies that can and will help if the unthinkable occurs, the very best approach is to be as certain as possible that nothing ever does happen. As a parent, I ask that you educate yourself concerning child sexual abuse.

The school district is fortunate to be able to work with Tim Dobeck, Law Director for the City of Parma, in order to provide you with information designed to help protect your child from these dangers.

Visit the main office of any of our buildings where a complete copy of Child Safety information is available. We have also made copies of this valuable resource available to the four county libraries within the district.

Safety Tips for Walkers

Please make sure your children know and follow these rules when walking or riding a bike to school:

Always try to bring a friend when walking or riding your bike to and from school.
Try to stay with a group if you are waiting for the school bus.
If someone you don’t know or feel comfortable with offers you a ride, say NO.
If someone you don’t know or trust follows you on foot, get away from him or her as fast as you can. If someone follows you in a car, turn around and go the other way.
If someone tries to take you somewhere, quickly get away and YELL.
Never leave school with someone you don’t know.
Don’t wear clothes with your name on the outside. If someone calls you by name and you don’t know them, DON’T BE FOOLED!
If you want to change your plans after school, check with your parents first.
If you go home alone after school, check to see that everything is okay before going in the house. Once inside call your parents to let them know you are OK.
Trust your feelings. If someone makes you feel scared or uncomfortable, get away and tell a trusted adult.

ALSO, after you get away from the person whom you don’t feel comfortable with, try to remember what they looked like and what they were wearing. If a car was involved, try to remember the color, type and license plate number.
