Peer Model Information

  • Typically Developing Peers

Because all children learn not only from adults, but from watching and interacting with other children, peer models are an important part of First Step Preschool. These children are 3, 4 and 5 year old children without identified disabilities who provide social interaction and motivation for preschoolers with special needs. Peer models experience a positive and supportive learning environment that fosters self-confidence and an appreciation for diversity among people. They participate daily in activities that facilitate cognitive, language, motor and self-help skills as well as social/emotional growth. Peer models are eligible to attend First Step Preschool based on the following guidelines:

    • must reside in the Parma City School District
    • must be toilet trained
    • participate in a screening to determine eligibility
    • pay tuition ($600 per year, plus a $45 supply fee)
    • parent/guardian provides own transportation
Parent/Guardians interested in enrolling their child as a  First Step peer model should complete the "Peer Model Application" and deliver the completed application to the First Step office.  Paper copies are also available in the First Step office during school hours. Once submitted, parent/guardians will be contacted to set up the eligibility screening appointment.
