    On August 1, 2018, Charles Smialek, Ph.D., began his tenure as the Superintendent of the Parma City School District.  Dr. Smialek comes to the Parma Schools after serving as Superintendent of the Euclid City School District from 2016-2018.

    Dr. Smialek earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Ohio State University in 1998.  He then earned his Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Kent State University in 1999, focusing on secondary social studies teaching. In 2008, he earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Kent State University.

    He began his career in education as a social studies teacher at Euclid Central Middle School in 1999.  During that time, he served as a team leader for other seventh grade teachers and served as head football coach at the middle school.

    During the 2003-2004 school year, Dr. Smialek served as the ninth grade unit principal at Euclid Middle School. He then returned to Central Middle School as assistant principal beginning in the fall of 2004. He served as assistant principal from 2004 to 2006.

    In 2006, Dr. Smialek was appointed principal of Forest Park Middle School, serving in that position for three years.   

    In 2009, he was named principal of Euclid High School, which served approximately 2,250 students.  His accomplishments include developing programs for improved learning environments, fostering partnerships for students to obtain college credit and implementing positive behavior programs.

    Dr. Smialek has served on the faculty of Kent State University as an Adjunct Professor in the Principal Licensure Program from 2008-2012 and Cleveland State University as part of the Inspired Leaders Program from 2014-2020.

    He and his wife, Rasheeda, live in Shaker Heights and are very proud of their blended family: Maria, Melissa, Douglas, London and Lance.

    Dr. Smialek will consistently focus on achieving three important goals as Superintendent in Parma:

    • Practice fiscal responsibility
    • Improve student achievement
    • Increase transparency and communication throughout our communities
