Beginning with the 2012 – 2013 school year, the Parma Board of Education, as provided for in ORC 3313.603, has adopted a policy to excuse qualified students from the physical education requirement for graduation. To qualify, a student in grades nine through twelve must have successfully completed two seasons of interscholastic athletics, marching band, flag corps, dance team or cheerleading. Students completing two seasons in any combination of the outlined activities are not required to complete any physical education course as a condition of graduation. However, the student shall be required to complete one half unit in another course of study.
For example, a freshman student completes the football season then as a 10th grader, completes the basketball season. This student is now eligible to apply for the waiver. In order to earn the waiver, the student must complete the Physical Education Waiver form for each activity completed. This form needs to be completed and signed immediately following the season. The form has all of the instructions.
Students who are granted the waiver are still eligible to choose physical education courses as elective courses.
Forms are available online under Athletics or the Department of Teaching and Learning. They are also available in the Student Services Office of each high school.
