WINTER SAFETY AND DRESS
As winter weather sets in, safety to and from school and appropriate winter dress becomes important for your youngsters. We ask that all parents review the following guidelines with their children:
No snowballing while at or while going to and from school. A snowball could easily injure someone. Also, throwing a snowball at a car or truck is unlawful and dangerous.
Outdoor recess will be held whenever possible. Please make sure that your children wear a warm coat, hats, gloves and boots. We use the 15 degree wind chill factor and the condition of the play area to determine the outdoor recess.
Students are encouraged to bring a change of shoes for during the school day.
If schools
are closed due to inclement weather or any other reason, it will be
announced on both television and radio. You may also check our
district website, www.parmacityschools.org
for the latest school
closings. In the event that school is cancelled, all evening
activities will be cancelled as well.
HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE(D)
Pleasantview
students recognized “Veteran’s Day” through a
variety of activities and a wonderful assembly. Mr. Ken Groner, World
War II Veteran, spoke with classes about the war. Our school hallway
displayed a “Wall of Honor” and war memorabilia. An all
school assembly was held on Friday, November 9, 2007 where student
council members spoke on topics such as the history of the U.S. flag,
the branches of service and other patriotic topics. Veterans, Mr,
Browning , Mr. Clark and Mr. Horabik, all spoke to the students about
serving in the wars. Fifth Graders, under the direction of Mr.
Plasterer, sang patriotic songs. This great assembly ended our
tribute to Veteran’s Day with a delicious cake that was donated
to our school from Giant Eagle.
Last year, our bulletin carried many articles regarding bullying. We will continue this conversation….. What if your child is a bully?
Reassure your child that you still love him/her-it is the behavior you don’t like.
Find out if there is something in particular which is troubling him/her and try to sort it out.
Establish rules about bullying and aggressive behavior and the consequences of such.
Explain that getting away from a situation before it becomes a case of bullying is a sign of strength and is a sensible way of ensuring that the situation does not get worse.
Teach your child about the positive aspects of diversity, whether it is racial, ethnic or the kinds of clothes people wear, or whether they’re short, tall, fat, thin. Attitudes begin at home.
Bullying will not be tolerated at Pleasantview Elementary School.
We are proud to announce that a new group of students have been recently trained to be conflict managers. Eight fifth graders, the Peaceful Pythons, have learned a 5 step problem-solving model that will enable them to resolve peer disputes in the school setting. While all mediations are monitored by adults, the students will use their problem-solving skills to guide the conflicting parties to a peaceful solution. Our Peaceful Pythons are:
Nick
Bykoskie, MaryKate Corum, Rachel Geis, Ashley Navolanic, Patrick
Nock, Rachel May, Nicholas Ricci and Jimmy Toth.
