Students Shine at Elementary Science Olympiad
Forty-five fifth and sixth grade students, who represented all twelve elementary buildings, competed at the Cleveland State Elementary Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 10. We competed against several other public school districts and private schools, including Solon, Shaker Heights, Olmsted Falls, Berea, and Westlake.more information>
Young Parma City Schools Mathematicians Showcase Their Great Thinking!
We are all mathematicians. It is perseverance and collaboration that develop the mathematician in all of us. That is the message that 124 fifth and sixth graders from six area schools heard and celebrated at Normandy High School during the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Problem-solving Tournament on Saturday, February 25, 2012.more information>
Family Night Is a Huge Success
Parents and students enjoyed a fun family event on March 14 that also had a serious purpose. Families were invited to attend an anti-bullying presentation featuring ventriloquist Mark Wade. The performance was followed by a dinner and activities such as making a craft, getting ID’s made for the children by the police and finishing off with a sundae bar. more information>
Greater Cleveland Automotive Technology Challenge
Congratulations to Valley Forge students Kamil Falkowski and Brandon Cwikllinski for their third place showing at the Greater Cleveland Automotive Technology Challenge at the new car show at the IX Center. Kamil Falkowski had the highest written test score of all students from across Ohio. Both students earned scholarship money to schools of their choice and have begun careers at dealerships as a result of the contest. more information>
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Project
Kent State University is conducting a project funded by the National Institutes of Health that is designed to compare different types of evidenced-based support programs for families in which grandmothers are the primary caregiver to grandchildren between ages 4-12 where no biological parent is meaningfully involved in care. more information>
Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Rocky River High School in Rocky River, OH.
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, twenty band and orchestra students from Shiloh Middle School participated in the 2012 Greater Cleveland Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Rocky River High School in Rocky River, Ohio. The contest uses a rating system rather than "places" for it’s competitions and students compete against a standard instead of against each other. more information>

Alisha currently works at Overdrive, Inc. and is planning to attend either Kent University or the University of Dayton to major in Business. State of the Schools Address
On February 23 Superintendent Jeff Graham gave his State of the Schools address to the Chamber of Commerce at noon and to the general public that evening. Superintendent Graham talked about the momentum that is building in the district to take the Parma City Schools in the right direction educationally while at the same time being respectful of the taxpayers' dollars.

School Board Members Encourage Congress to Find Collaborative Solutions to Education Challenges
Parma, Ohio (February 17, 2012) – Karen Dendorfer of the Parma City Board of Education joined more than 800 school board and state school boards association leaders recently to ask Congress to support public school students as they consider the reauthorization of the Elementary and Second Education Act (ESEA) this year. The ESEA is also known as No Child Left Behind. more information>
More Great News from Pleasant Valley!  Students who attend the Pleasant Valley GATE center, under the direction of Mrs. Bowman, entered the Monster Jam "Design a Truck" Contest. Students were to show their artistic talents and design an image on a monster truck. The image was to represent the student. The student then had to write two sentences about their truck. Maria was the 6th grade winner who represented NE Ohio at the Monster Jam on Feb. 25. She even received passes to the Pit Party.

BACKPACKS FOR KIDS NEEDS YOUR HELP
Last year KIKS Office and PCSD Collaborative teamed up to provide backpacks for 75 deserving youths in our school district. This school year, the C/B/S Partnership Committee and KIKS Office have committed to purchasing as many backpacks as we can at a price of $17 each to donate to the Collaborative. Our goal is to provide 400 by next summer. We are starting early and are asking for your help to fund the 2012-2013 school year even if it is for only one backpack. ABLE Program Recognized
The Parma City Schools ABLE Program was recently highlighted in the newsletter of the State’s Adult Basic and Literacy Education Team for their work in helping students to transition into postsecondary education, jobs and/or careers. Our own team of transition counselors, Stephanie Schab, Shannon Pelsnik and Angie Farson were featured. Our ABLE Program has been recognized for five years in a row for its outstanding work.
