School Year Extended an Additional Day

Dear Parents,

I would like to inform you that our school year must be extended by an additional day.  Under state law a school district is permitted five calamity days, and this year we exceeded the permitted days.

As I am sure you will recall, this has been an exceptional winter with major snowfalls, ice storms and weather-related events.  Whenever we determine that children and employees will not be able to come to school safely, or return home safely in the evening, we cancel school.  We were in this situation six different times this past school year.

As a result, state law requires that we make up one (1) of those days.  The other five days we closed for weather-related events were covered by the calamity days provided to us by the state.  In working with the state department, the make-up day was our only option.  All students in kindergarten through eleventh grade will make up the day on Thursday, June 12.

Due to graduation considerations at the three high schools, each school will conduct the make-up day for seniors prior to the commencement date.  Senior students and their parents are being informed, in a separate mailing, of the make-up plan and date.

Kindergarten through eleventh grade students must be in attendance on Thursday, June 12.  It will count as a regular school day in order for us to meet the minimum number of days that we must be in session each year.  Regular school transportation services will be available on that day.  Cafeteria services will be available for middle school and high school students.  Students at the elementary level will be asked to bring their own lunches on June 12, as is usual for their last day of school.

I am sending you this information now so your family has adequate time to make schedule adjustments.  Thank you for your continued support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Sarah Zatik. Ed.D.
