For those of you with friends or family who live outside of the Parma City School District, you may be familiar with the fact that in most communities, the local school district has its own channel on a cable system. This option was not available to the Parma City School District until very recently. Cox Communications has offered us a channel of our own and we have decided to take advantage of this great opportunity. We will be sharing some of the channel’s time with the three cities and other public institutions, but it will be the district’s dedicated channel. It will take several months for us to be able to mount a continuous and uninterrupted programming schedule, but we are hoping to do that by January 1, 2007. In the meantime, we will begin an hour a day of programming on Channel 45 beginning in March. This will give us a chance to prepare for the longer programming format. The Career Television and Radio class at Normandy High School under the direction of David Droes has and will continue to be an instrumental part of our planning. Over the coming months, you may see one of our student television crews in your building making videos that will be shown on Cox. At the present time, we are trying to plan programs that are “timeless” in nature. By this we mean a program we can produce now that will still be pertinent to our television viewers a year from now. We already know we will be taping segments on the Marzano Nine, the Career and Technical program, ALP and other specialty pieces, but we are always looking for ideas. If you have an idea for a television segment that we can create now and use in the future, please contact Community Outreach Specialist Kevin Brennan by e-mail or at 440-887-4889. Finally, I’d like to express my wishes for a wonderful holiday season to everyone. Whether you are staying home or traveling, please be safe and enjoy some time with those you love.

Crossing Guard Reception In an event sponsored by the Tri-City Safety Council and the district, adult crossing guards from the three cities were recognized on November 29 at the Red Rees Learning Center. Principal Chris Hartland from State Road School, who is also the chairperson for the Tri-City Safety Council, emceed the program which featured remarks by Superintendent Zatik and the safety directors from Parma and Parma Heights. Attendees were given lanyards, whistles and refreshments while all guards received certificates of recognition. Students from RidgeBrook and Dentzler Elementaries also contributed artwork showing their gratitude for the work performed by the guards. We would like to express a sincere thank you to all of the adult crossing guards who come to work in all types of weather to help keep our children safe. Their selflessness and dedication is greatly appreciated. Here is a photo taken by Career-Technical Education Director Bill Aubuchon of the guards who attended.
PEA Thanksgiving Food Drive Just an update to let everyone know that the PEA Thanksgiving Food Drive was a great success:) Thanks so much to my PEA "committee", Holly Holcomb (that's right just one member), without her strength and support, this project would not have gotten done. Anything that needed done, she did without hesitation -- THANK YOU. The boxes were unloaded and separated on Friday. Thank goodness on Monday afternoon, Mike Jaszczak and Kim Kohut came to our rescue with fresh bodies and lots of energy -- words cannot describe how valuable your help was. We filled over 70 cars, trucks and vans with your donations of food and $20.00 in a gift card to Giant Eagle. Not to mention the vans and trucks that came from the Parma Hunger Center to pack up any "leftovers". Those building reps who collected food, sorted and labeled it correctly and got it to Pleasant Valley during the appropriate times -- what can I say -- we wouldn't have a project without ALL of you. The Thanksgiving Food Drive would not have been possible without the entire Pleasant Valley Elementary School -- what a terrific staff and group of students to put up with us invading their lobby for two days and in general disrupting their lives. The office staff and Sue Rueger are truly amazing. Take heart in the fact that you helped a lot of people have a better couple of days. If you didn't help out this year, there is always next year -- there were some bugs in the system this year that need to be worked out and we are always looking for people willing to give of their time to others, keep this in mind if you have high school students who will need community service hours next year. Your only thanks may be the one I received from an elderly woman on oxygen -- she was raising her grandchildren because her 35 year old daughter was in the hospital having open heart surgery. She told me she prayed for help the same day I made my calls and the only money she had until the first of the month was the $20.00 in gift cards we gave her. There is not enough money in the world to buy that kind of feeling. Mary Ann Albaugh, Chairperson Community Relations Committee SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS NEEDED The School District is looking for people that would like to be substitutes in the following positions: Noon Monitor, Special Education Assistant, Clerks, and Secretaries. Please call Char Kallach at 440-885-8782 for more information on how to apply. OPEN ENROLLMENT The Parma City School District will accept applications for Intradistrict Open Enrollment for the school year 2006-07. The enrollment period is Nov. 15 until Jan. 16, 2006. Change of date for school board meeting The board of education's regularly scheduled work session for Monday, December 5 has been moved to Tuesday, December 6.

The fourth graders have been learning how some types of thinking can be more complex than other types and that the various thinking skills all depend upon each other. They are currently engaged in activities involving all six levels of thinking (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, and Synthesis) by studying plants as the main topic. After a wonderful Science Olympiad experience, the fifth and sixth graders have been researching the physical adaptations that animals develop in order to survive within certain circumstances. Every student was randomly assigned specific categories within these types of adaptations: Diet, Habitat, Climate, Social Grouping, Activity Period, and three “Wild Cards.” After researching 18 different physical adaptations and animals, the students are taking on the role of biologists to synthesize all the information into a “Scientific Article” which will describe a brand new animal that they have “discovered.” Following the winter vacation, the students will be embarking on new research-based, high-interest units such as: Flight; National Parks, Inventors and Inventions, Art Appreciation and Artists, Oceanography, and Law & Debate.

The business department would like to ask everyone to exercise appropriate caution now that the winter weather has arrived. Your patience is appreciated as our bus drivers may take extra time on the roads to ensure the safety of our students. Also as a courtesy to our students who walk to school, please try to shovel your sidewalks if at all possible. Happy holidays from all of us at the business department!

Be a Miracle! Normandy’s Medical Health Professions senior class has started their senior project, “Be a Miracle”. Working along side the National Bone Marrow Registry, the senior students are raising money to pay for the initial screenings associated with becoming a bone marrow donor. Among many fundraising ideas, currently the medical students are selling “be a miracle” bracelets. These blue and white swirl bracelets are available from any medical student and are being sold for $2. On February 1, 2006 our quarterly blood drive will coincide with a bone marrow drive, where interested parties (at least 18 years old) can have their initial screenings completed and join the registry. Any interested donors can call 440-885-8369 to sign up or for questions.

Production Printing Department The department is now able to provide color copies at a reasonable rate to staff members for instructional or building use. The cost for an 8 ½”x 11” single sided color copy on white bond paper is 10 cents. The cost for an 11” x 17” single sided color copy on white bond is 15 cents. This is a standard price and is available anytime during the school year. Photo quality paper is available at an additional charge. Requests for color copies should come on a print shop request “green sheet” form either signed by the building principal or with an account number for billing purposes. Please send any items to be copied on a disk or e-mail them to us in a PDF format as other formats are often problematic. We can accept hard copies, but it does slow down the turnaround time since the equipment is fully digital. Regrettably, the Production Printing Department is NOT permitted to work for private companies or individuals. Requested items MUST be for school use. At this special time of year, the staff of the Production Printing Department would like to extend our Holiday wishes to everyone on the staff. Your exceptional cooperation and support has made 2005 a great year for us and we appreciate all of your help.

PTA Cultural Arts Contest The Parma Council of PTAs (PCPTA) announces the “call for entries” for their annual cultural arts contest, Reflections. The contest is an outlet for Parma City Schools students; kindergarten to twelfth grade, to submit various artistic offerings based on the theme, “I Wonder Why.” “This is a great opportunity for a student to demonstrate their skills in one or more of the four categories, which are: Visual Arts, Photography, Musical Composition and Literature.” Karen Peel, PCPTA President announced. The rules for the contest, deadlines and details for each of the categories are available at every Parma City School. Deadlines vary in each building, but most are in December. Julie Wojcik, Cultural Arts Chairperson for PCPTA says, “We really hope parents and teachers encourage the students to take an entry packet and participate. The arts are an important part of our lives’ and students have this opportunity to be creative.” The student’s submissions are first judged at the school, than the Parma Council, than Ohio PTA, than those who are exceptional in creative expression move on to judging at the National PTA level.

Asset Approach pays off for students To promote positive behaviors and attitudes among our kindergarten through twelfth grade students, last year the Parma School District began initiating the Asset Approach, a national research-based program. The theme for the month of November was Student Empowerment. Activities during the month at Dentzler which highlighted this initiative were our Accelerated Reader Reward Assembly "Reading Is Magic," our Community Business School Partner's Ice Cream Sundae Bar Awards Program, the Parma Education Association Food Drive, our Thanksgiving community service projects for veterans and the Broadview Multi-Care Center and our weekly positive behavior recognition for Students of the Week. At the end of the month Students of the Week were eligible to become Students of the Month. These students from each of the classrooms were honored at a Student of the Month luncheon. Pictured are students who attended this celebration and were served ice cream cake as a dessert treat.

Thanks to our PTA The Green Valley PTA supports all of the major assemblies in which Green Valley Elementary School students participate. Mrs. Chmura is our President and Mrs. Kaiser is the Vice President who is in charge of assemblies. This year the PTA has generously brought The Cleveland Indians Slider on opening day, two fabulous mathematics assemblies, and most recently, Basketball Jones. Below are several photographs from the Basketball Jones program. Looking forward to March the PTA is sponsoring not one, but two "Artists in Residence" programs. An author and an illustrator will spend three and four days, respectively, as all of our students participate in a Young Authors' Conference! We are extremely grateful to our PTA. They are a major part of the heart and soul of Green Valley Elementary School.

SADD Chapter raises money and faculty dances! The Hillside Middle School SADD chapter has once again raised funds through its faculty and students to support the Red Cross. During spirit week, SADD raised $687.00 from contributions during students’ lunch periods. As a reward for the students’ participation in this worthwhile project, faculty members danced on the roof of Hillside to the Chicken Dance. Mrs. Amato, the school secretary, dressed up as the “Chicken” and Mrs. Kowicki, dressed up as the Hillside “Tigger”. Because the students met their goal, Mr. Minamyer, principal and Mr. Discenza, Assistant Principal danced the final chorus of the Chicken Dance. Not to be outdone, Mr. Viening and Mr. DiSalvo dressed up as ballerinas to end the day on a high note. Congratulations on another job well done by Mrs. Yvonne Riddle and Ms. Heather Doll, advisors of Hillside Middle School’s SADD chapter.

Students and Veterans Recognized for their Efforts John Glenn’s Community Business Partners, VFW Post 6709, hosted our first Sundae Bar Awards Ceremony on Nov. 18th. At this event 210 of our students were recognized with ice cream sundaes and awards for academic achievement, behavior, and effort! The event also served as recognition of Post 6709 Veterans for their service to our country. Students wrote and read aloud letters and poems dedicated to our Veteran friends and John Glenn’s Choir performed a rousing medley of military songs to set the mood! This was the Choir’s first performance, and they did a great job thanks to Mrs. Kammersgard, their director. It’s great that so many of our students earned the right to be recognized. Keep up the good work Voyagers!! News From Principal Dargay October ended with John Glenn’s annual Fall Festival parade and parties. Thanks to all our Room Parents who helped to organize the afternoon and came to celebrate with us. We couldn’t do it without you! November focused on academics, beginning with Parent-Teacher Conferences on Nov. 3rd. The importance placed on the home-school connection by the families and staff of John Glenn was evident in the crowded Media Center and by the full conference schedule sheets. Another important event aimed at strengthening the home-school connection took place on Nov. 15th. Mrs. Hausmann and Mrs. Stephens conducted a Parent Math Night at John Glenn to introduce parents to methods for encouraging mathematical thinking at home. These teachers deserve a round of applause for their time and effort! Judging by parent response to the program, more Math Nights may be in the works. Look for upcoming information. And speaking of our music program, please make plans to join our Choir and Instrumental students at their Winter Concert at Normandy on December 7th at 7:00 p.m. The kids have been working hard to get ready for this performance, and it’s really a good way to get into a holiday mood! We are also pleased to be heading out to the Sunrise Assisted Living Center at 7766 Broadview Road on Friday, December 9 at 10:30 a.m.to entertain the residents and spread some holiday cheer! Pixie Shop will be on Friday, December 9th, and Classroom holiday parties are scheduled for Friday, December 16th, the last day before Winter Break. Students are due back on Tuesday, January 3rd. The John Glenn staff joins me in wishing you and your family a relaxing and fun time together over the Break and a joyous New Year!

Veterans Past, Present and Future Each year the Veteran's Day Program at P.V. becomes a more community and school based highlight thanks to the dedication of Mrs. Zwolinski and her committee. This year we were able to have the Ladies Handbell Choir from Parma Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 703 and our own Andrew Fowler who plays the bagpipes participate as well as all of the children in our school. We were delighted to have a WWII veteran, Mr. Ralph Youngmann, share his story and educate students to the sacrifices for freedom. We had over 300 visitors including many area veterans. The children performed beautifully and the staff responded expertly, especially our music staff, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Rosewicz, and Mrs. Seredick. A tear-filled audience viewed a PowerPoint presentation including many of our students' family members currently serving our country.

Fire House Safety - Our second graders participated in the Fire House Safety tour. The students really enjoyed their visit and learned many practical safety procedures. The children went into the "Burn Room," a 20 x 20 structure furnished like an ordinary living room. The room is preserved in its post burn condition so students can view the destruction that fire can produce in a very short time.
Grade 4 and 5 Math Club - The purpose of the Math Club, under the direction of Mrs. Shaver, is for students to come for individual help and/or to practice skills by playing math games. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday during recess. Any fourth or fifth grader is welcome to come on either of these two days whenever additional assistance is needed in math. This includes questions on homework and doing practice problems to study for quizzes and tests. Please ask your fourth and fifth graders if they take advantage of this program.
Our peer tutors are doing a nice job! We appreciate the time they donate to help others. These students are: 4th Grade: Hayley Curtin, Andrea Ellison, Taylor Gardner, Alyssa Grygiel, Cody Komar, Laura Saydeh 5th Grade: Sarah Carney, Abigail Collins, Ameera Elghaffar, Kaylee LaManna, Scott Sasena, Jessica Stastny

Operation Phone Home Through the Social Studies Department at Shiloh, students are participating in “Operation Phone Home”. As part of this project, Shiloh students were able to "adopt" a group of servicemen on the USS Ronald Reagan. The students are collecting money to purchase phone cards to send to these servicemen so they will be able to call their families back home. It was an exciting time for the students at Shiloh when a former student, First Classman E-6 Tim Keck, came and spoke to them. This helped spark the drive to begin collecting money to purchase phone cards for soldiers in need as a way of saying thanks for serving our country.

Mileage Club encourages fitness Students at State Road Elementary School are burning calories and mingling with the members of City Hall. Under the direction of our Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Carol Brent, students are participating in the "Mileage Club." This program encourages our students to be active during their portion of outside recess. Students walk or run around the parameters of our playground and earn miles. There is a reward program for certain milestones. Not only are the students wild about this program, it has also encouraged positive social outcomes among our student population. We are very pleased with the program and recently added a community element, "Walking With a Celebrity." We have had a tremendous response from Parma City Hall. Mayor Depiero, Mickey Vittardi, The Recreation Director and Parma Law Director have made appearances at school.
