For all of us at the Administration Center, the district’s Maintenance Department, the staffs at Parma High School, Valley Forge High School and Pleasant Valley Elementary School, this has most certainly been a year of change. We have now successfully moved the Administration Center to the front of Parma High School. Both Parma and Valley Forge are enjoying new high tech computer labs made possible by these moves. We have moved our Maintenance Department from Pleasant Valley to the back vocational wing of Valley Forge. Pleasant Valley now has much needed new classrooms where Maintenance was previously located. While all these moves were taking place, our middle school staffs were initiating the teaching of foreign languages and the introduction of both advanced mathematics courses and intense courses for students with difficulties in math and reading. We introduced new courses, new textbooks, new instructional concepts and new curriculum in grades and courses across the district. Throughout this process of change, you have risen to the challenge. Professional and support staff members have adapted quickly and effectively to our new locations, new courses and new ways of teaching. We may be a “large district” in enrollment and staff, but we are still a close “educational family.” We have come together this past year to help children learn. No matter what your job or your building, you are and will always remain the key to making and keeping this a great school district. Now, as we are coming to the end of another school year, I want to thank you for your support of the district, and your dedication to our students.

School Lunches Health Watch There has been much focus on whether school lunches are causing the increase in childhood obesity. A recent study conducted by Ohio State University and Indiana University has shown that children are more likely to gain weight in the summer, not during the school year when they are eating school lunch! This indicates that influences other than school lunches could be responsible for the rise in overweight children. The researchers concluded that "most children - and especially children at high risk of obesity - were more vulnerable to excessive BMI gain when they were out of school during summer vacation than when they were in school...it appears that they (schools) are healthier than most children's non-school environments" Meal TRAC! Update Meal TRAC! has been installed in 9 schools now. The operations are running smoothly, and we're working out any kinks as we run into them. We have started enrolling students in the Meal TRAC! scan and plan to focus on secondary school enrollment. Please feel free to contact the Food Service Department with your questions or any feedback on this project.

It’s a very busy end of the year at Dentzler Elementary School! There are many events which are occurring during the months of May and June. Some of these events are: Grandpals’/Special Friends’ Day Mr. Chris Folsom, vocal music teacher, and Miss Amy Fridrich, art teacher, collaborated to create a “Carnival of the Animals” for our annual Grandpals’/Special Friends’ Day. Each grade level provided singing performances and choreography of various animals such as kangaroos, fish, donkeys, penguins, lions, zebras, turtles, elephants and frogs. After each performance the grandpals/special friends visited the students in their classrooms. Right-to-Read Week Many reading activities occurred May 21-May 25. Author Sandra Philipson, who has written the Max and Annie dog book series, provided classroom presentations with two of her dogs. Our theme was “Paws to Read” and included daily Paws for reading, creating paws door hangers, reading contracts for home reading and buddy reading in which students read with their classmates. Accelerated Reader Party Over 100 children were invited to a Pizza Party Luncheon (We love pizza!) to celebrate their achievement of reaching their Accelerated Reader grade levels goals for the year. Big Brothers/Big Sisters End of the Year Celebration 23 Padua High School students have been tutoring first through sixth grade Dentzler students once a week throughout the school year. All of the students enjoyed an end of the year celebration with a pizza party. Two Million Minutes Read by Green Valley Students Last year our goal was to read a collective one million minutes at Green Valley. We easily met that goal. This year we DOUBLED THE GOAL and our students read collectively OVER TWO MILLION MINUTES! Our theme this year was "Driven to Read". All students received t-shirts with the Driven to Read logo. As students completed their racetracks of books read they received "pit points" to purchase items in the "Pit Store" once a week. As an end-of-the-year celebration the entire school population will be engaged in A Celebration of Reading on May 23, 2007. On May 23rd students enjoyed the following activity stations: Camp Read A Lot, Make A Book, Word Games, Guest Readers, Readers' Theater, Poetry, Book Talks, and Planting Sunflowers and reading books in the land lab. One of the highlights of the day will be an assembly honoring our community of readers! Great prizes and real racing trophies will be awarded. Teachers, Mrs. Price and Mrs. Brooks are organizing this fun-filled day of reading!! Green Valley was adopted by two race car drivers this year: Mr. Oriti of Mars Trucking and Mr. Shymske of Shymske Auto. They generously donated many prizes, including real racing trophies, to our students! Congratulations to Arlene Kostyack, Grade 5, who has been the TOP READER IN THE SCHOOL every year for the last four years. This year she read 62,600 minutes. Pictured are the top readers in each classroom. Their range of minutes was between 7,000 to 62,600. Twelve students read over 14,000 minutes! In the last four years our Green Valley Literacy program has sky-rocketed. Next year our literacy theme will be Olympics based due to the Olympics in 2008. THE COW PLOP DROP The Green Valley Land Lab Team is proud to present “The Cow Plop Drop”, our unique walking path fundraiser on Sunday, June 3. Think of it as a game of BINGO with a twist. A cow’s plop in a 40’ by 80’ area next to the land lab will determine the winners. Tickets are only $5.00 for a chance to win a grand prize of a $500.00 Visa gift card or one of four first place $100.00 Visa gift cards. Winners need not be present, but we welcome everyone to come see the plop action from 1-4! Enjoy refreshments, a tractor show and additional raffles too… all in Green Valley’s front yard! Tickets can be purchased through the Green Valley School office (440.885.2433) by submitting $5.00 per ticket in an envelope. Please include your name, address, and phone number. Tickets will be issued by our team. Thank you for supporting our newest plan for our land lab: a walking path!

Peer Mediators On the Road! On Monday, May 14, four of Greenbriar’s Peer Mediators conducted a presentation for Hanna’s 5th and 6th grade classes. The 8th graders discussed and gave some techniques in how to deal with bullying and how to handle conflict resolution. The 5th and 6th graders participated and came away from the presentation with some great ideas on how to handle bullying and conflict situations, in and out of school. It was a worthwhile experience for all. The Greenbriar mediators plan to take their presentation on the road to some more elementary schools before the year is out. The participating peer mediators are Amy Butterfield, Nick Imes, Steve Naughton and Lauren Woodland. Faces of Freedom House Z would like to share a letter they received from a gentleman who saw the Faces of Freedom cards that were left at the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. when the 8th grade class visited our nation’s capital in March. Part of the class’s assignment was to research a fallen Vietnam veteran and leave a card with a message to him, in his memory, at the Wall. In addition, another gentleman from Pennsylvania called Greenbriar shortly after the trip to comment on how the cards touched him emotionally. It is truly awesome to know that the gestures of our students would have such far-reaching and emotional effects. March 23, 2007 To the 8th grade social studies students at Greenbriar Middle School; Recently, I was in Washington, D.C. to attend a Holocaust conference at the United States Holocaust Museum. This was a short but informative event and I was very happy to attend. Sad to say but someday I hope you take the time to learn about this horrible crime so that it may never be repeated. Upon conclusion of this conference I decided to spend the rest of my time visiting some of our nation’s many wonderful monuments. Having been to this area several times in the past and only having a few hours in which to see everything I walked at a rather brisk pace. However, when I came to the wall dedicated to the Viet Nam Veterans I noticed a number of letters written to our brave heroes who fell during that struggle. Though I would not normally do this I decided to read a few of these letters. Much to my great surprise I noticed that quite a few letters were written by students who never knew any of these people and were born quite a few years after that conflict ended. I am not a man who is prone to show a lot of emotion but the letters you wrote brought tears of great pride and joy to my eyes knowing that there are still young people in this great country who are willing to take the time to share their wonderful thoughts to those who have gone before us ensuring our own freedom. There is no doubt that the men and women who have fallen, their families and the veterans still alive today would think as highly of you as I do. From all of them and myself, thank you for your great kindness. You may have already guessed but I am a social studies teacher. I teach at Zeb Pike Youth Services Center in Colorado Springs at the base of Pike’s Peak. Sometimes it is very difficult for me to remember that there are still some really wonderful kids who still live in this country because my students are boys ages 12 to 20 who are locked up for committing some really bad crimes. Thanks for reminding me that you are still out there. I assure that my boys will know what you have done and I hope they will rise to your level of citizenship. With a great amount of appreciation, Mark Schaefer

Butterflies at Hanna! James E. Hanna is the site of one of just 1090 registered Monarch Waystations within the United States and Ontario Canada! Last Spring, Mrs. Badowski teamed up with the PTA and suggested that the school use some extra funds to start a butterfly garden in front of the school that would serve as a Monarch Waystation. The PTA loved the idea and with the help of various students, teachers and parents, the garden was planted. The photos depict the recent release of the butterflies!

Students Donate to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Hillside Student Council once again had a very successful "Pennies for Patients" campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Under the direction of our Student Council Vice President, Nik Majerle, the distribution and collection of boxes and the counting of the pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars took place from February 27 through March 9. Student Council collected $ 1,412.41. Mrs. Jarc's Homeroom will be awarded the Olive Garden luncheon for donating the most money. Drama Club Performs The Three Little Pigs The recently formed Drama Club at Hillside Middle School performed for the first time on Tuesday, April 3 in the school's Media Center. The students performed the play The Three Little Pigs to a packed audience and received rave reviews from all in attendance. Every one at Hillside is looking forward to next year's production, which is anticipated to be another great performance. The Drama Club is under the direction of Ms. Jeanne Goldberg and Ms. Dawn Kafiti. SADD Raises Money for Hunger Center with Basketball Game On Thursday, March 15, Hillside Middle School's SADD organization held its 7th annual SADD vs. Faculty Basketball Game. Once again, there was standing room only for this crowd pleaser. For the mere price of admission, students, faculty, friends and family were treated to a very competitive basketball game. (The teachers did win the game, but of course, that is not the point). The total money raised was $825.00 (an all time high) which was donated to the Parma Hunger Center. The advisors of this SADD chapter are truly indebted for the participation of the staff playing in the game (coached by Terry Bennett), for cheering on the staff (a lovely group of teachers under the direction of Mrs. Heidi Zimmerman) and especially to the brave teachers who were willing to take a pie in the face for this worthy cause (Ms. Heather Doll, Mrs. Jan Dacek, Mr. Dave Walder and our very own custodian, Mr. Bill). This was another TIGER-ific success story. Hillside Competes in Power of the Pen On Saturday, March 10, Barb Roslan, Halle Dawson and Connie Loescher traveled to Cleveland Heights for the Regional Power of the Pen Tournament. Hillside was well represented with Coach Dawson's two eighth grade writers, Svetlana Knezevic and Kyle Serenas, along with Coach Loescher's five seventh grade writers, Olivia Clark, Andrea Hofer, Amanda Frederick, Neil Golias and Jordan Strange. The day long activities had each writer composing three creative pieces. Coaches spent the day reading and evaluating 18 pieces of writing, adding comments of encouragement as well as suggestions for improvements. Every one walked away with a new appreciation of the dedication of the students to this art form and the devotion of the teachers to their students as well their passion for creative writing. Life Skills Classes Host Pre-Schoolers On Friday, March 30, the Hillside Life Skills classes held a Spring Pre-School Activity Day. The day began with the 35 children playing everything from puzzles to painting to crafts with 8th graders from Hillside. The attendees were then escorted to Hillside's Main Gym where they popped "balloons" using the parachute as a popcorn popper to "pop" the balloons. After so much activity, the children were then treated to a relaxing lunch of pizza, finger jello, cupcakes and juice before they began their Easter Egg hunt around Hillside to 22 bunny trail participants. The parents were treated to some well-deserved "down time" in the Media Center where they could enjoy refreshments, conversation and reading materials while their children were enjoying this annual community project. The Easter Bunny himself even made a rare appearance much to the surprise and delight of the children. Another wonderfully successful even held by Mrs. Riddle and her classes. Hillside Volleyball Try-outs Hillside 7th and 8th grade volleyball will begin on Monday, August 6th with a mandatory meeting. 7th grade meeting: 9-10 AM; 8th grade meeting 10:15-11:15 AM. Girls interested should bring their completed physical form to the meeting. Physical forms are available in the main office at school. Try-outs will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Aug 7-9). Girls must be present all three days to be considered for the team. 7th grade try-outs from 8-10 AM and 8th grade tryouts from 10 AM until noon. Questions about Hillside volleyball should be directed to Mrs. Tatoczenkog at: MrsT320@sbcglobal.net. Football Camp Hillside Middle School is holding its annual Football Camp again this year from Monday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 20, 2007. The camp is coordinated by Mike Lark, who has been the head football coach at Hillside for the past 13 season. Mr. Lark will be assisted by several middle school and high school experienced players and coaches, who have competed at the high school and college levels. The primary focus is on teaching the basic football skills necessary to succeed on an organized team. The team concept and sportsmanship will be emphasized as keys to a winning attitude. More information can be obtained by contacting Hillside Middle School directly; forms are located in the main office. Hillside Music The Hillside bands have been hard at work preparing for their spring performances. The seventh grade band performed their spring concert on May 9 to a full house. Both the seventh and eighth grade bands also traveled to Lorain on Saturday, May 12, to perform at the District IV Ohio Music Education Association Adjudicated event. Both bands performed three songs for judges who then gave them comment tapes to help them improve. Both groups did a wonderful job performing at this event and received many positive and helpful comments. Congratulations, Hillside Bands! In addition, the Hillside Tiger Jazz band has been performing throughout the year. They have performed at two school concerts as well as at several jazz festivals, the Parmatown mall, and the Parma Pierogi Dinner fundraiser. These hardworking students will finish out their year by performing at the Parma Rib-n-Rock event on June 7. Great job, jazz band! Art Show On Tuesday, May 8th, 152 Hillside art students came back to school with their friends and family to enjoy the second semester Art Show showcasing the talent of the young artists. Just like an art opening at a gallery or museum, over 500 pieces of artwork were on display. Some of the art projects included drawings, paintings and ceramics. Many commented on how talented these young are and were surprised and pleased to see this aspect of the students’ academic lives. While the art show happened in the media center, the Family and Consumer science students hosted the reception in the cafeteria. Everyone shared the refreshments and celebrated the young artists’ accomplishments. We hope you make it a point to visit an art museum or gallery this summer and enjoy the wonderful of art. 8th Grade Girls Track and Field Our last regular meet was against Shiloh and Greenbriar where we came in second place as a team. We will be participating in the Pioneer Conference meet on Tuesday, May 15, where we stand a great chance of winning some medals and ribbons. Our recognition pizza party will be Wednesday, May 23 in the school cafeteria at 3:00 PM. Parents of team members are invited to attend. At that time all athletes will be presented with their letters, pins, certificates and any ribbons or medals they may have won at the conference meet. A huge "Thank You" goes out to the athletes who worked hard and did their very best at each and every meet, our team parents who supported us throughout the season by attending meets and picking up their teens after practices, our coaches who worked hard with the team, and to Mr. Kilbane for arranging all of our transportation and keeping the mountains of paperwork in order!

Fairy Tale Extravaganza at Parkview Elementary Once upon a time, in the enchanted land of Parkview Elementary, there lived some first and second grade students. The Queens of the land, Mrs. Chismar, Miss Schaff, Mrs. Stacho, Mrs. Van Jura and Miss Woehrmann, knew that something was missing for the children of this land. They needed some magic! They needed something special! Together these benevolent Queens crafted a plan to bring magic into the children’s lives. Each day the students met with a different Queen who shared with them a story of magic and enchantment. The students listened with wonderment and awe and participated in activities and created projects for Strega Nona, The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg, Rapunzel and The Paper Bag Princess. The students learned about characterization, retelling, sequencing, summarizing, and tell tale signs of a fairy tale. Finally, one day was spent in the multipurpose room with all the children of the land coming together to celebrate these and so many more tales of fairies and princesses and ogres and witches! The Queens opened the celebration with a Readers’ Theatre of “The Fairy Godmother’s Assistant.” Then the children practiced geometry, measurement, and money skills, word attack skills and more characterizations as the magic that once had been missing was discovered. They brought these fairy tales to life and had an experience they’ll take with them on future journeys and adventures. They learned and laughed and explored new worlds and they, of course, all lived HAPPILY EVER AFTER! Celebrating the Classics “Celebrate the Classics” is the theme Parkview's Right to Read committee has chosen. We will spotlight: Make Way for Ducklings, Little House on the Prairie series, Bridge to Terabithia, Charlotte's Web, Little Red Riding Hood, Where the Wild Things Are, Blueberries for Sal, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and The Cat in the Hat. Students will be given reading logs and motivational bookmarks to "kick start" our celebration. On Friday, May 18th, students who return their completed reading logs will be treated to a piece of cake to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publishing of The Cat in the Hat.

Pleasantview Elementary School 's Fifth Graders from Martha Panek's class were on FOX 8-Cleveland's version of "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?"
