Hillside has two Academic Challenge teams-one eighth grade and one seventh grade team. The teams participate in the Fall and Spring Knowledge Master Competitions, the Quiz Bowl and the America Answers Challenge.
Hillside Yearbook Staff
Students can join the Hillside Yearbook Staff in October. Members of the yearbook staff create the layout for the yearbook, check student names with their pictures, design collages, club pages, activity pages, take pictures at various school events and proof all of the work. Many hours of work go into the Hillside yearbook.
Hillside Student Council
Our meetings are every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. Our Student Council is active in community and school activities. We've collected for the Pennies for Patients (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), Relay for Life, UNICEF, Make A Wish, American Red Cross and the Poppies for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. We've sponsored pep rallies, the Winter Wonderland Dance, the Breakfast Cafe, clean-up the school grounds, the supply cart, student guides to name a few activities.
Hillside Newspaper
The Tiger Tribune is our school newspaper. The staff is made up of 7th and 8th grade students with a variety of talents and interests. The students select what topics they want to write about, get the information and type their own stories. All students are welcome to be part of the Hillside Tiger Tribune staff. The paper includes interviews, current events, advice, poetry, editorials, photographs, drawings, and much more. Students are taught about editing, layouts, interviewing and other newspaper writing techniques. We also use basic computer skills for editing and publishing the newspaper. The paper is published four times a school year.
Hillside Drama Club
The Drama Club at Hillside Middle School is only two years old. The club meets twice a month during the school year. We engage in drama games, improvisation and rehearsed skits. The club goes on a field trip to the Playhouse, where they are trained in different aspects of dance and acting. The year culminates with a spring production--this year we will be performing our own opera! All students are welcome to attend the meetings. The Drama Club is always looking for new people and suggestions to make the club better every year.
Hillside Youth Alive
Youth Alive is a service based organization designed to help students help others in our community. Youth Alive participates in various service projects in the Parma City School District as well as projects with Cuyahoga County as a whole. Leaf raking, Angel Tree, collecting clothes for the homeless, as well as creating items for our soldiers are just some of the many activities the group participates in. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings where you can enjoy friends, food and fun -- for free!
Hillside SADD Chapter
Throughout the year SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) is involved in activities that benefit others and emphasizes making good decisions. SADD is a student driven organization that empowers students to make positive life choices and represents a "no drug use" policy of drugs, alcohol and other destructive decisions. This year we raised over $400 to be given to the American Cancer Society as part of our "Chicken Dance" fundraiser. We collect gifts for those less fortunate as part of our "Giving Tree". In the spring we will be involved in the Staff vs. Students basketball game which will benefit the Parma Hunger Center. When not involved in a specific activity, we welcome speakers to our meetings from different walks of life. All students are welcome to join!! Students can come to a meeting and see what SADD is all about!
Hillside Builder's Club
Hillside's Builder's Club is a student-led service organization for middle school students. It is part of the Kiwanis family of organizations. As this is the first year for this club at Hillside, we are very excited. So far this year, the students have helped to raise money by manning the Salvation Army kettle at the K-Mart in Seven Hills and we are currently sending cards to veterans at the two local VA Hospitals. Many more service projects are in the works! Bob Gilly, of Gillingham Ford is the club's sponsor and Katherine Malquist of the Cuyahoga County Library is our community volunteer. Faculty advisors are Ms. Bender and Ms. Kafiti -- listen to the morning announcements for dates and times of upcoming meetings -- new members are always welcome!
