My First Book of Colors by Chuck Murphy
Summary: This pop-up/flap book contains simple, colorful pictures of common objects. At the end of the book there is a pop-up picture of mice painting a big house using all the colors in the book. The book is nicely organized for children to “read” independently.
Hints for reading aloud
As you read the story together emphasize the question "What color is/are the ..."? Have your child guess verbally or give your child a choice of two colors to select from. (What color are the strawberries? Are they red or yellow?) Ask your child if he/she can guess anything else that is the same color (“What else is red?”). Then turn the flap over to see the other pictures of the same color. Have your child point to the same color circle.
Things to use at home
8 washable markers sidewalk chalk
watercolor paints with 2 paint brushes
Activities
- Read the story together twice asking “What color are the ...?” Draw a picture together using all colored markers and/or paints.
- Mix the water colors together and make different colors.
- Sequence the colors in a row, rainbow or train shape. For example, make a red circle then green, yellow and orange. Give your child the paints and or markers and have him/her draw the same sequence as you did. Then let your child have a turn while you follow his/her sequence. For summertime fun, do the same activity outdoors using sidewalk chalk.
- Activity Games: Play I SPY. "I spy something RED". Help your child name all the things you see that are red. Red Light, Green Light is another game to play with your child. Have your child draw and/or color green and red circles. Look at the traffic lights while driving in the car and talk about "red means stop, green means go."
