Summary
This Help Desk Hint will give instructions on how to properly install and use the Big Keys Keyboard along side the standard keyboard so that both may be used at any time.
Solution
- Click on Start, Shut Down, Shut Down Computer
- When the computer informs you that it is safe to turn off the computer, please do so.
- Attach the Big Keys Keyboard to the Co-Pilot adapter box
- Find the 2 adapter cords (short cords, about 8" long, one has a small jack attached to a large plug, the other has a large plug attached to a small jack)
- Insert the adapter with the large plug into the remaining socket on the Co-Pilot Box.
- Attach the adapter with the large socket to the end of the cord coming out of the Co-Pilot Adapter Box.
- You should now have the short adapter coming out of the Co-Pilot, it has a small socket. You should also have a longer cord coming out of the Co-Pilot Box near the arrow that ends in a small plug.
- Verifying that the computer is off, turn the computer around and remove the standard keyboard plug from the back of the machine. Insert this plug into the short adapter cord attached to the Co-Pilot Box.
- Take the remaining long cord that ends in a plug and carefully insert it into the jack where you just removed the cord as noted above.
- Verify your setup with the included diagram.
- Turn on the computer.
- Both keyboards can now be used interchangeably at any time. In fact, you can actually use them simultaneously as long as only one key on any keyboard is pressed at a time.
Benefits
- Teacher can still use the standard keyboard
- Students who are still learning the letters can quickly find the correct key
- Students who are ready to move on to the standard keyboard can do so at any time
- Once the initial setup is complete, you do not need to change any cords, computer settings or programs. It all works all of the time.
