Computer misbehaves when going to sleep after anti-virus software is installed Date Reviewed: January 20, 1998
Article ID: HDH98003
The information in this Help Desk Hint applies to:
- Windows 95 with McAffee anti-virus software
Summary
This Help Desk Hint will solve a two main problems. The first problem is the computer starts an error scan after waking up for no apparent reason. The second problem is that the screen saver starts up and stops almost immediately. Please note, this hint only applies to Windows 95 machines with McAffee anti-virus software.
Problem
McAffee has an option which will do a scan of all your files whenever your computer is not busy doing something, a.k.a. whenever the screen saver is running. On some computers this scanning will signal the computer to stop the screen saver. On other machines it will ignore the activity until the user either wakes it up (which McAffee likes) or the machines puts itself to sleep. (which McAffee does not like) McAffee views this interruption as a potential error which then causes the full disk scan.
Solution
- Click on Start, Shut Down, Restart Computer
- Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
- Double Click on Display
- Click on the Screen Scan tab (Not the screen saver tab) You should now see a screen full of ways to modify McAffee
- At the very top of the form, there is a check box next to phrase about enabling scanning when the screen saver is active.
- You must remove the check mark from that box.
- Say OK to the Display box, close the Control Panel and you are done.
Benefits
- No more strange scandisks being done when you know the computer was put to sleep correctly
- Your screen saver will function correctly again
