Passport to Travel
(K-2) Summer fun! Imagine you have traveled to five different places in a nearby city over the summer. You went to the park after going to the lake but before going to your friend's house. The last place you visited was the library, just after your visit to the movie theater. Use drawings, pictures or manipulatives to show the order - from first to last - in which you visited the places. In what other order could you have visited them? How many different ways can you order your visits to these same five places?
(3-4) Let's pack! Imagine it is time to get your suitcase packed for a trip to Hawaii. Baggage weight limits on the airplane restrict you to packing only shorts, shirts and bathing suits. Because of the length of your trip, you have to pack exactly 15 items. To make sure you have enough to wear, you must have at least 3 pairs of shorts, 3 shirts and 3 bathing suits; but you cannot have more than 9 of any 1 of the 3 items. How many different clothing combinations can you choose from when you pack your suitcase? Use drawings, pictures or manipulatives to help you.
(5-6) Where is everyone? Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee was the most visited national park in the United States in 2005 and 2006. In fact, the number of visitors increased from 9,192,477 to 9,289,215. Rounded to the nearest thousand, how many more people visited the park in 2006 than in the previous year? The second- and third-most-visited parks were not so fortunate. Both had a decline in visitors. Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona fell from 4,401,522 to 4,279,439 visitors per year. Yosemite National Park in California had 3,304,144 visitors in 2005 and 3,242,644 in 2006. Which national park had the greatest decline in numbers? Which park had the greatest percentage drop in attendance?
