This is a Tech Prep course designed to prepare students for a seamless transition to high tech careers in Biological Sciences. Students will be exposed to college level course content. An emphasis is placed upon developing the laboratory and research skills that are required by employers in all Biology related fields. Topics covered in both the classroom and laboratory include Biochemistry, Energetics, Anatomy and Physiology, Embryology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. The relationship of each of those topics to Biotechnology will be emphasized.
This course meets for two periods a day. At least 50% of the time is spent in the laboratory. Students who have completed a pathway which includes Biology I Honors and Chemistry I Honors are eligible for up to 15 college credits, as long as they are successful in Biotechnology and complete a one week summer bridge course at Tri-C. Physics is highly recommended either as a prerequisite or taken concurrently with Biotechnology. Students may take the course without completing recommended pathway as long as they have a record of being successful in Biology and Chemistry.
